Growth Company Services

Part-time finance director for Growing Businesses

From experience, it has become clear that the entrepreneurs we work with fall into 2 camps, they are either a font of new ideas and none of them get enough focus to give them a chance of being successful OR they are worried about gambling what they have already on a change in strategy – and end up “frozen”.

For our relationship to work, we must start by collectively understanding what success looks and feels like to you as an individual. Whilst this almost always changes over time, the growth plan must be based on this.

In the vast majority of cases, most CEOs that we have worked with have a “to do list” of projects but are wondering which one they should do first and don’t know what each project will cost. In many ways this is the dark art of strategic financial planning. Whilst the process can be described, it’s the application of this process to the individual’s definition of success, the teams skills and experience and the particular product and sector, that makes the role so demanding.

Molkte the Elder, the famous Prussian general describes in his book on the Art of War that the best plans do not survive first engagement with the enemy. This is true in business. Therefore, I work on the basis that whilst the initial plan is a great way to get started because collective goals are agreed, the fact of the matter is, that as a management team, we have to develop our skills fast to recognise the unfolding reality in front of us as we implement the plan – and adapt our activities accordingly whilst maintaining the overall objectives.

Typically, our involvement with a business has a more intensive period of involvement at the start but this soon settles down to a regular monthly involvement between 1-4 days per month.
